Artisans et commerçants dans les villes d’Egypte, à la fin du XIXe siècle, une source peu exploitée : les annuaires

Abstract : From the 1860's, the Egyptian cities enter a period of reorganisation which accelerates. These changes are concomitant of a number of transformations in the field of the production, with an increased number of factories and concentration of investments, and in the field of services with the growth of the tertiary sector. The spatial organisation of cities is affected all the more as, during the same period, they are provided with outer-urban railroad lines. Besides, the extension of urbanised areas, which develops faster than population growth, results in urban spaces which are no longer as dense as they had been, and to a redistribution of population. These reorganisations are a consequence of residential and\or economic strategies which give way to concentrations, segregations, and even to exclusions. The administrative and commercial directories are in sufficient numbers to allow a diachronic analysis of these reorganisations.
