Abstract : The present contribution aims at two objectives : the first one is to present a new way to utilize 3D computer generated models as a complement to traditional methods of documentation of the architectural historian, and as a visual support in scientific discourse. In analyzing the pillars of the axial chapel of the cathedral of Rouen (early 14th century) in order to illustrate some of the possibilities of application of these new techniques, the second aim of the article is to highlight some of the profound formal and functional changes affecting the pillars conceived by French architects in the later Middle Ages. The profound questioning of the idea what a pillar was to be and how it ought to look like makes it clear that this period of Gothic was not as poor in major artistic innovations as is still asserted by many scholars.
