From cathedral to monastery: ecclesiastical career and family strategy in the eleventh century Provence

Da catedral ao mosteiro: carreira eclesiástica e estratégia familiar na Provença do século XI

Until the middle of the eleventh century, in spite of the tight ties between the monastic communities and the high aristocracy of Provence that founded or restored these communities, the sons of the nobility intended for the ecclesiastical life do not enter in the monasteries but in the cathedral chapters from where they will become bishops. This trend changes during the Gregorian Reform, due to the contest against the dioceses domination by the noble families and the monasteries increasing importance in the theocratic policy of the papacy. In this unset of power reorganization, choosing adults conversion instead of child oblation is a lineage strategy.

Embora a alta aristocracia provençal mantenha elos estreitos com as comunidades monásticas que ela funda ou restaura, seus filhos destinados à vida eclesiástica, até meados do século XI, não são enviados aos mosteiros mas aos capítulos catedrais de onde eles devem sair para ocupar uma sé episcopal. Durante a Reforma Gregoriana, com a contestação da dominação dos bispados pelas grandes famílias e a importância crescente dos mosteiros na difusão da política teocrática do papado, esta tendência se transforma. Em um contexto de reestruturação do poder, a opção pela conversão de adultos ao invés da oblação de crianças se manifesta como uma estratégia de controle de linhagem.
