L'école, point de fuite ou point d'ancrage ? Être parent d'élève dans l'hypercentre populaire de Marseille

Abstract : This Master’s thesis is a reflection on the relation between forty-odd parents – showing very different social and cultural characteristics – and their children’s school, in a disadvantaged area: the very centre of Marseilles, where politics have been trying to launch a gentrification process for many years. Multiple sociology and geography studies have focused on some up and middle-class parents’ residential strategies, implemented in order to grant their children a better education in a school they consider as being better. Can other parents resort to these strategies? Furthermore, should one not wonder how school can influence these residential paths in other ways? This work shows that school can indeed represent an important resource for some – very diverse – parents, who sometimes take school as a reason to settle in the disadvantaged area they live in.
