Romanisation et développement : le cas de la cité des Arvernes (IIe s. av. J.-C. – IIe s. apr. J.-C.)

Abstract : The paper presents an overview of knowledges about the Arverni territory (Roman province of Gallia Aquitania) from the 2nd c. BC to the 2nd c. AD. It tries to highlight the heterochrony and geographical disparities in their development, by questioning the relevance of applying the concept of development to the study of the rural spaces (rhythms, time and space scales at work in the development processes). It attempts to answer the following question: does the heterogeneity of rural areas result from inequalities of development or from a better integration of these spaces within a regional system based on economic complementarity of resources ? Among the development factors considered, special attention is paid to the role played by urban markets (capital of city and small towns), by communication axes (roads and rivers), by the resources available in contrasting environments (marked by plains/mountains complementarity) and by the protohistoric legacy.
