La figure du descendant d'esclave urbain dans les oeuvres littéraires merina (Madagascar) : quelles représentations pour cette assignation identitaire subalterne ?

Abstract : In Antananarivo, the capital city of Madagascar, an important part of the urban population has a slavery descent. These so-called « descendant of slaves » form a subaltern group whose social, political and cultural situation is very bad. This situation is a major stigma and deeply structures the city as far as its social and spatial organization is concerned. Though, this key issue is frequently unmentioned in the urban society, like a taboo. The paper deals with the place given to this social phenomenon in Merina literary works with take place in urban places : novels, short stories, comic strips, lyrics. The analysis is founded on social geography methods and aims. The descendant of slaves are often absent of these works or are invisible characters. This concerns at the highest point women. Many authors also use euphemisms to deal with them. Nevertheless, since the 1990s, there has been a social turn in the Malagasy literature : descendants of slaves are now main characters, who are considered as victims of an unfair system. The authors write as if they were talking in their names, in a kind of advocacy literature. But studying what are the social origins of theses authors leads to question the way they denounce such a situation. Most of them belong to most prestigious social groups of the Malagasy society whereas none of them is of slave origin. Eventually the works here studied display the perpetuation of a hierarchical and unchanged social order.
