La traduction en arabe du roman mondial (1991-2015). Jalons pour une enquête

This contribution, which follows others devoted to contemporary Arabic translation, sheds light on a particularly neglected aspect of this field of study: that of novels translated into Arabic, with a particular focus on the recent period (since the early 1990s). The choice of the novel is dictated by several reasons. First, it is one of the easiest written forms to isolate within editorial production; secondly, it is the one that today circulates most between the various linguistic areas. Finally, during the second half of the twentieth century, the novel emerged as the dominant genre within the Arab literary field, which in turn followed the evolution of the world literary canon. Logically, this domination imposed itself first in the Egyptian center of the Arab field (parallel to the domination of the Egyptian cultural industries in the same period, and particularly those of publishing and cinema), before spreading to the other regional cultural centers (Lebanon and Syria, Palestine, Iraq) and, later, its peripheries (Maghreb, Arabian Peninsula). Although there is no perfect concomitance between these different movements, the emergence of a national novel in the various Arab countries is linked to that of a national publishing sector in these same countries. In the same way, the existence of the latter is the first necessary condition for the development of the translated book. The choice of the most recent period leads us thus to consider a multipolar Arab publishing field, even if the Cairo and Beirut poles remain dominant (both quantitatively and by the symbolic capital accumulated in modern history) in this field.
Cette contribution, qui fait suite à d’autres consacrées à la traduction arabe contemporaine, propose un éclairage sur un aspect particulièrement négligé de ce champ d’étude : celui de la production romanesque traduite en arabe, en se concentrant plus particulièrement sur la période récente (depuis le début des années 1990). Le choix du roman est dicté par plusieurs raisons. D’abord, c’est une des formes écrites les plus aisées à isoler au sein de la production éditoriale ; ensuite, c’est celle qui de nos jours circule le plus aisément entre les diverses aires linguistiques . Enfin, au cours de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, le roman s’est imposé comme le genre dominant au sein du champ littéraire arabe, lequel a, ce faisant, suivi l’évolution du canon littéraire mondial. Logiquement, c’est d’abord dans le centre égyptien du champ arabe que cette domination s’est imposée (parallèlement à la domination des industries culturelles égyptiennes dans la même période, et notamment celles de l’édition et du cinéma), avant de gagner les autres pôles culturels régionaux (Liban et Syrie, Palestine, Irak) puis de s’imposer dans ses périphéries (Maghreb, péninsule Arabique). Sans qu’il y ait concomitance parfaite entre ces différents mouvements, l’émergence du roman national dans les différents pays arabes a partie liée avec l’émergence d’une production éditoriale nationale dans ces mêmes pays ; dans le même sens, l’existence de cette dernière est la première condition nécessaire au développement du livre traduit. Le choix de la période la plus récente amène donc à envisager un champ éditorial arabe multipolaire, même si les pôles cairote et beyrouthin y restent dominants (quantitativement, et par le capital symbolique accumulé dans l’histoire moderne).
