« The l'envoy » : Mésinterprétation, digression, inversion
Résumé
This paper focuses on the scene of the l’envoy (act 3, scene 1). It first analyses the purpose of the series of digressions initiated by Moth: diverting Don Armado from his melancholy, mocking the melancholy posture, reversing the master/page relationship and reflecting upon the Erasmian adage (festina lente). It then puts the emphasis on the low characters (Moth and Costard) that, in this scene, steal the show and outshine Don Armado, as they display both elaborate figures of speech (antimetaboles and antanaclases) and bawdy double entendre (signalling the return of the repressed boy). It finally tackles the issues of univocal perception, lack of understanding and misunderstanding, and raises the question of plural, equivocal interpretations triggered by a language that is polysemic and slippery.
Il s’agira ici d’analyser la scène de l’envoy (acte 3, scène 1). Dans un premier temps, on s’interrogera sur la finalité des nombreuses digressions de Moth : divertir Don Armado de sa mélancolie ? se moquer de la pose mélancolique ? inverser la relation maître/esclave ? méditer l’adage festina lente d’Érasme ? Dans un deuxième temps, on s’intéressera aux personnages secondaires (Moth et Costard) qui, ici, s’emparent du devant de la scène et éclipsent Don Armado en déployant des figures de style élaborées (antimétaboles et antanaclases) et des double sens grivois (indices que le corps refoulé fait retour). Dans un troisième temps, on se penchera sur l’univocité, l’incompréhension et la mésinterprétation pour aborder la question de la pluralité interprétative inséparable d’une langue polysémique.
