Analyse spatiale, cartographie et histoire urbaine

Résumé

Spatial analysis is a set of approaches aiming to describe the ways in which concrete spatial structures are organised and how space is occupied. These approaches are mainly put into practice by geographers, architects, anthropologists and sociologists but are also of interest to historians. Nevertheless, because of the nature of data at their disposal and the use historians make of spatial analysis, they are uneasy with the tools and methods available, which are often too sophisticated to be applied to the partial data they deal with. Today, the options opened up by computer technology mean that cartography has become a tool for investigating data which is within anyone’s reach. This book is organised in four chapters. The first one deals with the definition of spatial analysis, of its origin and of its particular topic. It offers an understanding of the nebulous concept coined under the term urban space and the main methods of investigation that can be activated for its study. The second chapter deals with the sources, sometimes unspecific, that the spatial analysis works on. Its last part presents a few practical methods for the preparation of documents in order to decipher them more easily. The next chapter draws a picture of the tools and methods implemented by spatial analysis. It also presents computer programs, their advantages as well as their short-comings. Finally, the last chapter offers practical examples of spatial analysis being applied by historians of cities and urban space.
