« Algunos supuestos “vulgarismos” que probablemente no existen: consideraciones metodológicas sobre la lengua de Valerio del Bierzo »

Résumé

The language of Valerius of Bierzo (second half of the VIIth century) has been considered, traditionally, as very “vulgar”. I shall not try to go to the other extreme and to affirm that it is a model of classicism, but at least I would like to raise some methodological issues: 1o though Valerius’s manuscript tradition is relatively rich, many supposed “vulgarisms” are based on only one manuscript (T = Madrid BN 10007, a. 902); 2o when the manuscript tradition allows to choose between a “classical” and an “unclassical” variant, often the second reading was preferred in the name of the principle of the lectio difficilior (and also, probably, because of Valerius’s reputation of being “vulgar”), even if the first variant has a very high stemmatic weight; 3o even when the text is well established, some “vulgarisms” were mentioned which probably exist only in the interpretation of the modern linguists.
