S’il est un domaine où l’humanité s’est implicitement inspiré de l’idée du développement durable bien avant que l’expression n’existe, c’est bien celui de l’aménagement. En effet, les générations passées ont multiplié des aménagements qui ont servi à leur époque avant de continuer de servir les générations suivantes, même lorsque l’usage de ces aménagements s’est modifié. Néanmoins, l’histoire, et tout particulièrement l’histoire contemporaine, connaît aussi de nombreux aménagements qu’il n’est guère approprié de considérer comme conformes à la logique du « développement durable ». Mais une telle conformité ne se mesure pas seulement au départ ; elle ne peut se juger qu’au cours de la vie des dits aménagements. Néanmoins, il importe de préciser quelques étapes du questionnement aménagement et développement durable et d’insister sur le risque que l’aménagement durable soit une démarche alibi.
