Plantes de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation en Roussillon antique ; les données carpologiques

Abstract : For the last twenty years, large-scale public works (Agly’s dam and LGV Roussillon) and constructions of new major motorways have helped to improve archaeological research in Roussillon. Prior to this increase in development, the Historical period (Antiquity/Medieval), was not well known. New sites near Perpignan have increased our understanding of this period, particularly the Roman period, with six new sites. Carbonised remains from these excavations have provided carpological material (in varying degrees of abundance). From the analysis of the samples, we found 21 cultivated/gathered taxa: 4 cereals, 4 pulses, 1 technical/oil plant, 3 condiment/aromatic plants and 9 fruits, plus about fifty weeds/wild plants. Despite major methodological bias, the archaeobotanical material allows us to discuss about the possible identification of two-rowed hulled barley (Hordeum distichum), the identification of wine products/by-products remains and about the exploitation of local wetlands (now dried) and meadow. These first results from the ancient Roussillon, though limited, can be compared with other sites from nearby areas, Languedoc and Catalonia. This study completes the information about plant production from this part of the Mediterranean.
