Sentiment national : un clivage entre adolescents irréligieux et musulmans

Abstract : How do individual integration to religion and to the political community combine? In the French context, characterized by a strong secularization, we analyse the effect of belonging to a faith group (Christian, Muslim, other) and the irreligiosity (mesasured as distance vis-à-vis religion) based on a large data set (n=9.000) of students attending junior high school. We find than intense religiosity is never correlated to the the higher attachment to the nation-state. Attachment is highest among the most irreligious adolescents, and lowest among Muslims. In addition those espousing the ideals of liberty and equality and strict separation of church and state are the most irreligious children.
