Marking of Arguments in Balochi Ergative and Mixed Constructions

Résumé

Balochi, a contemporary language of the Iranian branch of Indo-European languages, is spoken in Western Pakistan, South Western Afghanistan, South Eastern Iran and some other countries by several millions of people. Its dialects may be divided into a Western, a Southern and an Eastern group. While many Balochi dialects pattern ergatively in the PAST domain, many sentences show deviant constructions. These patterns and their combination in one and the same language are interesting from a typological point of view; they are the topic of this paper. The approach will be a comparative one, contrasting Balochi dialects with each other, and with data from earlier Iranian languages.
