Réflexions sur les relations entre Romains et gymnase(s) grec(s)

Abstract : After a few methodological remarks about how to approach cultural contacts between Rome and the Greek world, my purpose in writing the present paper is to underline the complexity of relations between practices and representations by studying Roman connections with Greek gymnasium(a). I will address the question of how a unitary, simplistic and negative image of the gymnasium was built, and then, based on the texts of Livy and Valerius Maximus, I will focus on the case of Scipio Africanus, who visited the Syracuse gymnasium on a regular basis.
