Architecture, décor et organisation de l'espace. Les enjeux de l'archéologie médiévale : Mélanges d'archéologie et d'histoire de l'art du Moyen Âge offerts à Jean-François Reynaud

Abstract : Specialist of the medieval archeology, Jean-François Reynaud carried out a successful investigation on paleochristian and medieval Lyons. He then extended his research on the Rhône-Alpes region, associating the practice of sedimentary archaeology with the still recent building archaeology. Mirror of his scientific activities, his teaching offered the Lyon 2 university a large range of DEA, masters and thesis based on both types of archeology. His colleagues, friends and students put together in this book different works which encompass teaching and practical training of Jean-François Reynaud throughout his career. It was then logical to involve the new generations, his direct successors, whose works prove that original dynamism is still present, that research is even more important than before and that a wide range of interests co-exist. The book starts with the monographs of sites. They are real laboratories where methods and issues are worked out, where great historical reports take shape and where restoration and conservation of the heritage do find good advice. The book carries on with organization of religious space which enables the reader to enter into the delicate field of the relations between architecture, monument representation, liturgy and the daily life inside the church, the canonic district or the monastery. Throughout the centuries, morphogenesis of places and buildings feed on these decisive data. The book finally focuses on the relevance of these approaches based on renewed methods including in a great extent history of art and archaeology, from sculpture and building techniques to space analysis and conservation of archaeological sites.
