The French School at Athens has a rich archival heritage (excavation notebooks, drawings, photographs, etc.) reflecting fieldworks and studies as well as institutional and administrative changes in the school since its creation (1846). Through the example of the so-called “manu-script” archives of some of the EFA’s former scientific members who have pursued all or part of their careers at the University of Strasbourg, this text deals with the problems of
identifying, collecting and promo-ting the public records in archaeology: fonds splitting, dichotomy between administrative and scientific records,
archives “privatization”.
