These correspondences, a priori surprising, are the result of a chain of regular changes observed in the historical phonetics of Vietnamese (Ferlus 1992), namely: ? b?n, MC pjin, analized as a disyllabic [p.jìn]> (Northern Vietnamese) p.zin> (monosyllabization) zin> (devoicing) sin> s?n> (occlusivization of s) t?n, SV tân, ) ?ien> (devoicing) ?ien> (occlusivization of ?) t?ien, SV thiên " slanting ,
Old Vietnamese has a series of three preglottalized plosives, ?, ?, ?, represented today by the nasals m, n, ? (m, n, nh in romanization) In Sino-Vietnamese, the initial combination ?j-was interpreted as the former preglottalized palatal ? and is thus represented by present-day nh : ? y?, MC ?jit, analyzed as [?j] (initial)+ [ìt] (rime)> (interpretation of ?jby ?-) ?it> (nasalization of ?) ?it> ??t, SV nh?t, ?in> (nasalization of ?) ?in> ??n ,
