Vers une définition internationale du rural en Europe

Abstract : The theoretic definition of rural areas constitutes indeed a very classical topic of the academical cursus in Geography. However, it also appears as a more and more needed tool in the assessment of rural development policies at national and European levels. This papers is aiming thus at inventorying and comparing together the most recent definitions of rurality, whose use is made in more than thirty European countries, in order to recall the main territorial subdivisions and criteria conveyed for their application and the different issuing spatial typologies as well. Beyond the exercise, it seems but that an international convergence is growingly standing out in Europe, led by the operational requirements of communautary regional planning: that is a gradual, regional, multi-level and functional definition of the European countryside.
