The origin of an imaginary national geography seen through the Romantic Hungarian Painting
La genèse d'une géographie nationale imaginaire à travers la peinture romantique hongroise
Résumé
In the 19th century, as in other countries, Romanticism helped shape the Hungarian national identity. This article tries to show how, more specifically, Hungarian Romantic painting created an archetypal image of the Hungarian territory. After the turning point of the year 1848, the most popular Hungarian painters revisited landscapes, turning them into symbols. A spatial and historical reversal then occured : artists turned towards the heartland of the Hungarian Kingdom, particularly the Great Plain (Alföld). This allowed for the formation of a strictly Hungarian imaginary geography of places. It reinforced the nation’s self image, at a time when Europe was rapidly developing.
La pensée romantique, en Hongrie comme ailleurs, a joué un grand rôle dans la constitution d'une identité nationale au XIXe siècle. Cet article souhaite montrer en particulier comment la peinture romantique hongroise a créé une image archétypale du territoire hongrois. À partir du tournant de 1848, les peintres hongrois les plus populaires réinterprètent les paysages en tant que symboles. On constate alors un retournement, historique et spatial: le romantisme pictural hongrois se tourne vers le coeur du royaume de Hongrie, en particulier vers la Grande Plaine ou Alföld. Ceci a permis la constitution d'une géographie imaginaire des lieux strictement hongroise et a renforcé l'image de la nation au sein d'une Europe en plein essor.
