Templo, Tiempo, Tempo en la iglesia románica

Abstract : This article tries to displace the issues related to medieval sacredness from the spatial dimen- sion of the church (its institution during the ritual of dedication, its fixation in the altar, its performance in the liturgical framework) towards the experience of its temporal dimension. The space of the church programs a place for the ritual; in turn, it shapes the liturgical practices, the organization of the decor, and the articulation and meaning of ecclesiastical spaces. Traces of the dedication mark the structure of the building; as a consequence, images, texts, gestures and sounds can appear within the church. The necessary alternation between sound and silence, between gathering and emptiness, between actions and inaction in the church give rhythm to medieval sacredness and leave marks on the building. This article attempts to analyse some of these traces inscribed, painted or sculpted in Romanesque churches, and to see how to articulate the moment of their realization, the permanence of their exposure in the building and their presence in the liturgical or aesthetics experience. Throughout some Romanesque examples of the south of France and the north of Spain, this paper tries to see how the chronological milestones of the institution of sacredness are displayed in texts and monumental images.
