Gaze and personal deixis : The address in debates occurring between the two ballots of French presidential elections

Deictics seem a priori a good field for studying how multimodality contributes to the identification of the discourse referent. In particular, all utterances are addressed to someone and this addressing mechanism rests jointly on linguistic markers and non-linguistic indicators, the main one being the gaze. In the corpus of media interactions we study (i.e. the debates occurring between the two ballots of French presidential elections), where the gaze can target both the co-present interactants and the audience, this complex system will be examined in two clearly different types of sequences: first, the openings of the debate, when the moderators are mainly speaking to the TV viewers, and then the moments when one of the candidates mentions the other in his presence.
