Dieudonné M’Bala M’Bala: Between Anti-Racism, Antisemitism, and Holocaust Denial

Abstract : This article deals with the role played by Dieudonné M'Bala M'Bala aka. Dieudonné in the challenging of Jews' extermination during WW2. As a very famous humorist in France, Dieudonné promoted a mix of anti-Semitic stances, Holocaust denial, and conspiracy theories which is even more surprising given that in the early stages of his career Dieudonné was initially viewed as an anti-racist activist with a strong personal commitment fighting the radical-right party Front National. Dieudonné is now at the center of a curious constellation of people who were once foes but are now finding common ground through his hate speeches. Goal of this article is to try to understand how such a constellation developed, and analyzing what role Holocaust denial plays in this set of popular ideas and representations. In order to do so, Dieudonné’s career is briefly summarized, his social resonance is sketched, and finally so the nature and role of the kind of Holocaust denial he spreads.
