"Le théâtre noir brésilien : un processus militant d’affirmation de l’identité afro-brésilienne", met en avant les différentes formes artistiques et esthétiques du théâtre noir au Brésil de sa création en 1944 jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Ce théâtre constitue une réponse militante et artistique de la part de membres du groupe ethnique afro-brésilien à un sujet jusqu'à aujourd'hui tabou au Brésil: la discrimination raciale qui émane de l’ensemble de la société brésilienne envers les populations afro-brésiliennes. Depuis 2001, le gouvernement fédéral brésilien met toutefois en avant des politiques d'action affirmative en faveur des populations noires et commence à admettre l'existence du racisme. Le théâtre noir a donc parallèlement connu un nouvel essor et traduit, tant en termes de dramaturgie qu’esthétiquement sur le plateau, les nouvelles aspirations des populations afro-brésiliennes. L'ouvrage, souligne le travail des précurseurs brésiliens dans ce domaine de l’art engagé et en montrant quels sont les choix artistiques et politiques actuels de ce théâtre de revendication identitaire. Entre théâtre épique, théâtre documentaire, théâtre Butô, conte, les sources de ce théâtre politique sont nombreuses. Le livre est inédit et se fonde sur des entretiens de plus de 150 personnes qui incluent les pionniers du théâtre noir comme les comédiens et metteurs en scène d’aujourd’hui. Il articule à la fois des formes théâtrales passées et présentes et des espaces géographiques brésiliens très distincts comme Rio de janeiro, Sao Paulo et Salvador. L’ouvrage reflète un questionnement autour de la négritude et de ses héritiers et amène à s’intéresser plus largement à l’engagement politique des artistes africains et de la diaspora au sein du théâtre contemporain.
“The Brazilian Black theatre, an affirmation process of the afro-brazilian identity » highlights the different artistic and aesthetic forms of black theatre in Brazil from its foundation in 1944 until today. This theatre is an activist and artistic answer of members of the Afro-Brazilian ethnic group to a subject taboo until today in Brazil: racial discrimination emanating from all Brazilian society towards Afro-Brazilian populations. Since 2001, the Brazilian federal government, however, highlights the affirmative action policies for black people and begins to admit the existence of racism. In parallel black theatre experienced a revival, and revealed both in terms of dramaturgy and aesthetically on stage, the new aspirations of Afro-Brazilian populations. The book, points out the work of Brazilian pioneers in this field of politically committed art and stresses the artistic and political current choices of this identity claim theatre. Between epic theatre, documentary theatre, Butoh theatre, storytelling, the sources of this political theatre are many. The book is based on interviews of more than 150 people which include the pioneers of black theatre as the actors and directors of today. It articulates both past and present theatrical forms and very different Brazilian geographic areas such as Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Salvador. The work reflects a questioning about negritude and its heirs and focus more broadly on the political commitment of African artists and African diaspora within contemporary theatre.
