Local agro-food networks and environmental effects in Brittany

Résumé

The project CREPE (Co-operative Research on Environmental Problems in Europe) joined academic researchers and civil society organizations to produce knowledge and know-how on co-operative research. The report analyses the development of short food-supply chains and their environmental effects in Brittany. It has been carried out by the Federation Régionale des Centres d’Initiatives pour Valoriser l’Agriculture et le Milieu rural (FRCIVAM). This study has aims which include the following: 1. To identify and explain the main environmental benefits when farmers get involved in a local agri-food network. 2. To identify available methodologies and tools to assess those environmental effects. The analysis focused on three analytical axis : the shortening of food chains, greenhouse gas emissions and the role of local authorities. It describes 3 environmental strategies of farmers using short food chains, and the diversity of approaches led by 3 cities (Lille, Rennes, Saint Etienne)
