Résumé
The present work explores the various ways of associating tourism and science in borderlands, such as the Chilean Patagonia. Although this geographic area is marked with much symbolic value in the imaginary of travelers, the development of tourism is here still young due to the intricate territory, the complex connectivity and a relatively poorly structured offer.
This territory has countless natural and cultural resources. During its long history of the European discovery, opened by Hernán de Magallanes in 1520, Patagonia is visited by a large number of famous travelers and scientists, in search of glory and knowledge of these still unknown lands. Today this wilderness is still an exceptional outdoor laboratory for various disciplines of human and nature sciences. Here the concept of scientific tourism seems to find fertile soil as for experimentation and fieldwork, some even in the style of the great naturalists of the past. We observe here all of the multiple forms of scientific tourism, such as cultural tourism with scientific contents, scientific eco-volunteering, adventure and sports expeditions with scientific approaches and scientific field research as such.
The authors analyze the various expressions of this concept, propose a theoretical framework, and perform a historical analysis of their appearance and present examples of pioneer and current cases. They conclude their analysis by studying how the scientific resource can be activated within the framework of a regional tourism development project for Aysén, in Chilean Patagonia.
This book is both an invitation to travel and to analyze the social and territorial dynamics that are observed in remote areas as tourism rises. It analyzes the possible transformations of the Chilean Patagonia through tourism engineering as well as the opportunities and challenges that surge with innovative and alternative ways of traveling
La presente obre explora las variadas formas de asociar el turismo y la ciencia en un confín geográfico, como lo es la Patagonia chilena. Si bien este espacio esta cargado de valor simbólico en los imaginarios de los viajeros, el desarrollo del turismo es aun allí incipiente debido al intricado territorio, las complejidades en cuanto a circulación y a una oferta aun poco estructurada.
Este espacio cuenta con un sin número de recursos naturales y culturales. Durante su larga historia de descubrimiento europeo, abierto por Hernán de Magallanes en 1520, la Patagonia recibe la visita de un gran número de ilustres viajeros y científicos, en búsqueda de gloria y conocimientos de tierras “aún incógnitas”. Hoy aún este territorio de naturaleza extrema es un laboratorio al aire libre excepcional para diversas ramas de las ciencias de la vida, de la tierra y del hombre. Aquí el concepto del turismo científico parece encontrar tierra fértil en cuanto a experimentaciones y trabajos de campo al estilo de los grandes naturalistas de antaño. Se observa la aparición de diversas expresiones del turismo científico, tanto como cultural con contenido científico, el eco-voluntariado científico, expediciones aventureras y deportivas con enfoques científicos e investigaciones científicas de campo propiamente tal.
Los autores analizan las diversas facetas de este concepto, proponen su marco teórico, realizan un análisis histórico de su surgimiento y presentan ejemplos de casos pioneros y actuales. Concluyen esta mirada reflexiva con un planteamiento sobre la activación del recurso científico en el marco de un proyecto regional de desarrollo territorial y turístico para Aysén, en la Patagonia chilena.
Este libro es tanto una invitación a viajar como a reflexionar sobre las dinámicas sociales y territoriales que se observa en zonas extremas con el auge del turismo. Analiza las posibles transformaciones de la Patagonia chilena mediante la ingeniería turística así como las oportunidades y desafíos asociado a formas innovadores y alternativas de viajar
