Abstract : In promoting a history of mores focused on the specific historicity of each period, romantic historiography turns away from “histoire-bataille” (Monteil) (“history as battles”), considered a history of dates and of the powerful. Against the grain of these principles, the Gallery of Battles celebrates French victories through a homogeneous and heroic vision of the historical past from Clovis to Napoleon. This museographic set-up first and mainly reflects the politics of history of the July regime, but it nonetheless highlights the difficult reintegration of the battle-scene in the revolutionised conception of history thirty years after the Napoleonic saga, which enables a study of the competition between history painting and history writing during the 1830s.
