L'expression du futur dans des langues sémitiques méridionales

Abstract : Keywords: Modern Southarabian, Afrosemitic, tense, mode, periphrases, grammaticalization, typology, comparison. The topic of the paper is how Future is encoded in some Southern Semitic Languages. Specifically it deals with the different morpho-syntactic processes that are used in languages spoken on both sides of the Red Sea. They are genetically related but have different typologies. Seven unwritten languages are taken into account: six Modern Southarabian languages (MSAL) spoken in Yemen and Oman, and Dahālik spoken exclusively on the Dahlak archipelago (in Eritrea) and linked to the Afrosemitic group (as Tigre and Tigrinya). The VSO and Auxiliary+Verb order characterizes the former while the SOV and Verb+Auxiliary (alternating sometimes with Auxiliary+Verb) defines the latter. In all languages the verbal system is based on aspectual opposition between perfective and imperfective. This basic system is developed with auxiliaries to express tenses and moods. Except soqotri (MSAL), all languages have a specific form for expressing the future tense. It can be a predicative verbo-nominal form as in some MSAL, or a verb at perfective conjugation and marked by a copula (as in Dahālik). Verbal periphrases with auxiliaries or the conjugated verb with prefix particle are used to express the modal future. In some languages the periphrases have been grammaticalized and involved in the evolution and renewal of the verbal system (as in Dahālik). The different values of the Future are reviewed for highlighting the common features but also the different evolutions of the verbal system within both sub-groups, MSAL and Afrosemitic. This study contributes to clarify the link between the evolution of the Afroasiatic verbal system and the word order in the verb phrase. Except for the languages spoken in Oman and unless otherwise specified the data were collected during my fieldwork, in the Yemen and Eritrea
