Journalist in the Algerian Civil War: An intellectual Profession between Literature and Politics
Journaliste dans la guerre civile algérienne : Une profession intellectuelle entre littérature et politique

This article analyzes the evolution of the social status of the Algerian journalist in the intellectual field of Algeria during the «black decade» of the 1990s, through the prism of the literary field. The statistical approach coupled with the analysis of individual trajectories shows that journalism is an intermediate intellectual profession in the process of decommissioning (especially in relation to primary and higher education). The liberalization of the press after October 1988, however, allowed the profession to gain a great prestige, and to compete with the figure of the writer, until then paragon of the engaged intellectual, on the political terrain.
Cet article analyse l’évolution du statut social du journaliste algérien au sein du champ intellectuel algérien pendant la « décennie noire » des années 1990, à travers le prisme du champ littéraire. L’approche statistique couplée à l’analyse de trajectoires individuelles permet de montrer que le journalisme est une profession intellectuelle intermédiaire en voie de déclassement (en particulier par rapport aux métiers de l’enseignement primaire et supérieur). La libéralisation de la presse après Octobre 1988 permet toutefois à la profession de gagner un grand prestige, et de concurrencer la figure de l’écrivain, jusque là parangon de l’intellectuel engagé, sur le terrain politique.
