3 184 « Merveilles naturelles » : une photographie de la géographie de la France dans les années 1970

Abstract : After a short evocation of the geography of France in the early 1970s, the paper examines the origin of the Guide des Merveilles naturelles de la France, published in 1973 by the Reader’s Digest. Memories collected in June 2009, particularly with geographer F. Verger and editor B. Willerval, converge to illuminate the reasons for an inventory of more than 3000 items. Elements are also provided about the genesis of the book, the choice of sites and authors. The construction of a database, despite its limitations, highlights areas well endowed with sites (mountains and coastal areas), compared to others with less sites or areas without any site, by far the majority. Some interpretations are proposed as a working hypothesis: importance of the picturesque, role of discontinuities, conservative ideology.
