Stratification, montage, symbiose. Les textes et les images du calice et de la patène de Saint-Godehard d’Hildesheim

Abstract : The chalice and paten made for St. Godehard church in Hildesheim during the first half of the thirteenth century are some of the many liturgical objects from the Middle Ages presenting texts and images to provide a complex discourse on the Eucharist and the priest’s function. These two objects provide an opportunity to address the question about text/image relations in visual arts beyond the scholarly traditions (of epigraphy, art history or literature), the questionable necessity of historical disciplines that separate from each other the different objects of material culture from the Middle Ages, and the reading of medieval works of art through the prism of contemporary theories about visual culture. This article sets out some milestones for a less compartmentalized approach to texts and images, based on a historiographic assessment and the study of a specific example.
