L'occupation de la grotte de Saint-Marcel (Ardèche, France) au Paléolithique moyen : stratégie d'exploitation de l'environnement et type d'occupation de la grotte. L'exemple des couches i, j et j'

Abstract : The Saint-Marcel cave is located along the Ardèche canyon, near the Rhône valley. This cave has yielded a sequence dated probably between isotopic stages 5 and 3. This sequence is composed of several occupation levels with faunal remains and artefacts. Among the richest assemblages are levels i, j andj'. The analysis of all the archaeological data provides evidence on the subsistence strategies adopted by humans around the cave (animal and raw material collection). Then activities inside the cave are examined, both the treatment of carcasses and the technical behaviour (processing system, kinds of tools). The Saint-Marcel cave shows evidence of seasonal occupation, principally during the spring, for the hunting of Cervidae, with shorter occupation periods in the autumn for roe-deer. These results are compared with patterns from other sites located in the same south-eastern area of France. They allow the variability of human behaviour and the possible links between some kinds of occupation and the technical choices of the occupants to be discussed.
