La modernité et l'art de l'apparence. Quand C.B. rencontre C. G.

Abstract : With The Painter of Modern Life, Baudelaire doesn’t only aim at supplying the features of modernity (what is transitory, poetical in historical). Indeed, not only does he show how art and modernity are indissociable but, what is more, that modernity is based on a new attention paid to appearance. In that sense, Constantin Guys, the anonymous painter of modern life, managed to convey the "grain" of present, the consistency of modernity which can be spotted in shapes, clothes, attitudes. That being the case, this essay offers a new dialogue between the figure of the poet, an art critic too, and the one of the artist who, both of them, try and catch the intrications of modernity without opposing appearance and depth.
