Abstract : Through the multiplication, diversity but also convergence of discourses it triggers, the picturesque garden, which materialises in France in the years 1770 (way before one talks about « ecology ») brings about sensitivity to environmental issues, both as a political instrument and an intellectual model. Gardens are seen as an antidote to urban insalubrity. They offer a frame that complies with medical advice ; they allow for a reflection on the idea of conservation of nature, by proposing intervention modes more respectful of the environment or by conserving botanical rarities. Last but not least, they cause to sense the importance of the growing threat of the materialising industry over the landscapes.
