Autobiographies d’écrivains est-allemands parues depuis 1990 : quel retour sur le passé ?

Abstract : Since the German reunification, a lot of East German authors have felt the need to publish their autobiography to justify their existence passed in the GDR. The particular status of East German autobiographies is analyzed through four works by Jurij Brezan (Pass ohne Zoll), Günter de Bruyn (Vierzig Jahre), Günter Kunert (Erwachsenenspiele) and Heiner Müller (Krieg ohne Schlacht). This article puts in conversation these various perspectives on the past through a study of the following themes: the origin of a „literary vocation“ in the context of the GDR, the construction of the Wall and its aftermath (as experienced both in, or far away from Berlin) as well as retrospective accounts of the 40-year-long existence of East Germany.
