Le feu et la cendre

Abstract : The prototype of the nouns for 'fire' (Skt. agní-, Lat. ignis, OCS ognĭ, Lith. ugnìs, Latv. uguns) has been reconstructed as *(h1)óg-ni-/*(h1)ég-ni-, a derivative from an otherwise unknown root, which would follow the acrostatic type of inflection. But this is at variance with the inflectional type and the accentuation of the Sanskrit word, and it cannot explain the Baltic and Slavic forms. The paper discusses alternative accounts and proposes a new etymology, which would comply with the typology of the designations of the fire.
