LA MÉDITERRANÉE, UNE GÉOGRAPHIE PARADOXALE. SITUATIONS DÉMOGRAPHIQUES ET LOGIQUES MIGRATOIRES TRANS-MÉDITERRANÉENNES

Abstract : The Mediterranean is often presented as a demographic duality between the North and the South. In order to confirm or disprove this idea, different demographic criteria must be examined. Density and urbanization can be ruled out. Indeed, the first is too disparate in countries that we think, in France, the French Côte d'Azur coastal areas and the hinterland of the Alpes-Maritimes or in Egypt in the Nile Valley Compared with the deserts of East and West. As for urbanization, it is not only defined in different definitions according to country, making comparisons difficult, but also in a political history peculiar to each State, such as the effects of contemporary civil conflicts on the environment. Urbanization in Greece or more recently in Algeria. On the other hand, natural and migratory movements offer discriminants that are fairly precise and therefore timely. Their study leads to two contradictory analyzes. According to the first, the Mediterranean is dual, divided into two geographical sub-groups with different demographic characteristics. But this first approach can be called into question insofar as a more precise analysis concludes with a plural Mediterranean.
