Esquisse de l’historien en maître d’œuvre : Aux sources de la Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l’homme

Abstract : In November 1991, facing a rise of tensions in the Mediterranean (political Islam, conflicts in former Yugoslavia, first Gulf war), the French Ministry of Research asked the historian Robert Ilbert to draw up a map of the studies carried out in France on the Mediterranean area and to make proposals to improve this academic field. This survey was aiming at counting the intellectual forces on this sensitive field and encouraging them to collaborate better and form a network able to provide deciders with keys to understanding. Taking advantage of a favorable political and scientific context, R. Robert succeeded in transforming this short-term political order into a permanent scientific device, the research campus of the Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l’homme in Aix-en- Provence which was to be created a few years later. Assistant to R.Ilbert for this mission, the author retraces this episode of scientific policy on the basis of notes of the time and personal reflections made during the following years.
