L’enjeu de la parole chez Chappuys et Belleforest traducteurs de Guazzo

Abstract : In 1579, Gabriel Chappuys published the translation of Stefano Guazzo’s Civil conversazione (1574), precisely when François de Belleforest’s published his own version. This competition fosters a comparison between their respective skills and relative faithfulness to their source-text. The study of the three quotations Montaigne borrows from the Italian text, and above all the study of some major mistakes Belleforest makes in a translation that circulated more widely, show that the definitions of civility and conversation-sociability may have inspired the later fortune of conversation during the seventeenth century in France.
