A “flavor of Diversity”: Intercreation and the Making of a Mosaic-Whole

Résumé

Quite ahead of his time, Victor Segalen paved the way for intercultural exchanges and promoted the perception of the Diverse. Applied to translation such notions as kaleidoscopic vision, complementary elements or eternal incomprehensibility will be discussed in their application to translation and will help envisage a new process, tesseration, by working together a collage of diverse constituents of what is exo (from outside) in the original text into the new version. This will produce what I have named a mosaic-whole. To reach this objective, voyeurism is to be abolished, transcultural values to be taken into account so as to transcend singular identities, and notions of creativity to be re-examined in the light of new relations between authorship, authority, otherness and language.
