Entre Est et Ouest : une européanisation urbaine

Abstract : Cities in Eastern and Central Europe have been living a threefold change since about 25 years: the structural transformations due to the phasing-out from planned economy and the shift to democracy, the entering into globalization allowed by the opening of borders since 1990, and the preparation then the achievement of the accession to the European Union. This historical reminder puts in its context the issue of the Revue Géographique de l’Est, dedicated to the Europeanization of cities in the East and in the West. Before the presentation of the papers, the introduction of this special issue reminds how urban studies have been addressing these transformations in the post-Cold War episteme, and provides a critical analysis of the “post-socialist” city. Then it comes back to the notion of “European city” through social sciences for decades. It analyses how a Europeanization of cities in the East and in the West, both from a spatial point of view (a Europeanization by cities) and an ontological point of view (a Europeanization of cities) has been discussed by the literature.
