Re-working Translations for the American reader - or the domestication of British English translations

Résumé

This article aims to demonstrate that a comparison of different translations can expose both the role of the editor and the differences between publishing practices in the United States and in Great Britain. It also examines whether the changes made by copyeditors and proofreaders result in textual homogenisation, and how far these changes reflect a desire to render the text more immediately accessible for the North American readership. The study focuses on two translations by Ian Monk. The first is his translation of L’Empire des Loups by Jean-Christophe Grangé, published by The Harvill Press in 2004 as Empire of the Wolves (EWa) and subsequently by HarperCollins in the United States as The Empire of the Wolves (EWb). The second is his translation of Dans ces bras-là by Camille Laurens, which was published in the United Kingdom by Bloomsbury in 2003 with the title In Those Arms (ITA), followed by Random House in the United States as In His Arms (IHA). The present paper focuses on changes that do not strike the reader as being “American” per se.
