L’art comme propagande royale ? Henri II d’Angleterre, Aliénor d’Aquitaine et leurs enfants (1154-1204)

Abstract : Henry II and his children are struggling to govern the vast empire Plantagenet against the king of France and the local aristocracy, always ready to revolt. To affirm their power, they resort to art, which became an actual propaganda media, even if the word could seem anachronistic. They primarily sponsor architecture, while “Angevin” gothic spreads in their continental dominions. They thus highlight the churches, monasteries and hospitals they promote, in a similar way than castles, whose political signifi cance is obvious. They use also funerary statues, stained glass and murals to exalt their royal power. The way they exploit art to political purposes is very well documented for 12th century. Thus their patronage raises complex methodological problems to the medievalist.
