Les chercheurs « habitat » de l’Institut d’Urbanisme de Paris : Eléments pour une sociohistoire des urbanistes dans la recherche urbaine

Abstract : This paper explores the way researchers have addressed urban matters – and housing in particular – during their career and when taking part in an Urbanism degree. Our empirical research looks at the professional careers of a small group of teaching researchers that formed itself during the 1980s within the Institut d’Urbanisme de Paris (IUP), now merged into the Ecole d’Urbanisme de Paris. These academics share a common interest for housing issues. During the 1980 and 1990 decades, education at the IUP increasingly focused on housing topics, while a strong demand for knowledge in this field emerged from actors involved in social housing policies. This new approach in education was brought by academics that had strong links with urban actors and payed attention to social stakes in their researches, in developing countries in particular. During the 2000s, due to the recruiting of a large generation of PhD candidates and the strengthening of their relations with urban actors, these academics have become more numerous and gained importance within IUP. In the recent period however, we argue housing has not emerged as a strong research field within the research unit attached to the IUP. This is a consequence of a lack of theoretical and conceptual common work on the notions of “ housing ”and “ habitat"
