Le Mas Desports : un établissement portuaire antique et médiéval en petite Camargue

Abstract : The Mas Desports site is located on a small hill limiting the former shoreline of the north-eastern horn of Or lagoon, in little Camargue. Surveys conducted in the late 1980s by Claude Raynaud and François Favory, showed up seven areas of concentration of archaeological artefacts with a first occupation dated Neolithic and reoccupation from the middle of the 2nd century AD to nowadays. Desports shows – in addition to its name – all characters of a port : topography of interfluve, position on majors thoroughfares. These characters have been confirmed and amplified by the archaeological surveys that have focused on the multiplicity, scope and organisation into hierarchy of occupied areas, as well as the density of pottery fragments Mediterranean imports. The central location of the place of Mas Desports in the eastern Languedoc coastal population has partly justified a new survey operation in autumn 2012, to supplement and clarify the documentation.
