François Joseph-Gall (1758-1828)

Résumé

The doctor and anatomist François-Joseph Gall was the founder of phrenology, a science of the mind which is now considered outdated, but which was of considerable importance in the Western world in the first half of the XIX century. Phrenology puts forward a concept of the perpetration of crime, the passing of judgement and the application of penalties which was really “ criminology ” before the term was invented Notice for The Encyclopedia of Law and Society is the largest comprehensive and international treatment of the law and society field. With an Advisory Board of 62 members from 20 countries and six continents, the three volumes of this state-of-the-art resource represent interdisciplinary perspectives on law from sociology, criminology, cultural anthropology, political science, social psychology, and economics. By globalizing the Encyclopedia's coverage, American and international law and society will be better understood within its historical and comparative context.
