Légitimité du chercheur et pratiques de catégorisation en contexte ethnographique

Abstract : The main concern of this paper is the question of advocacy to do research on, for and with specific marginalized, stigmatized and dominated groups. This question raises in two different contexts and presents two different issues. The first one is concerning to the right to speak for LGBTQI communities and activist groups whose voices have been silenced in the past by a dominant heteronormative power. The second one is raised in scientific communities, more particulary in reflexive and queer anthropology, traditionnaly attentive to minorities, reflexive knowledge and to the « feminist standpoint theory » (Collins 1989). The data presented in this article are drawn from semi-structured opend-ended interviews, video and audio recordings of naturally occurring interactions, mails between participants and ethnographers and comments posted on social networks. The data were collected in three different fieldworks and communities : gay and lesbian parents, drag king community and trans people. In this paper, we analyze how the researcher position in the fieldwork is assessed, negociated, refused and accepted by members through a complex network of reformulation and categorization practices. The more general question of the production of scientific knowledge intertwined with power issues will be discussed through the notion of « observation of participation » (Tedlock 1991) and categorization practices.
