Queering Education: A Blind Spot in French Educational Policies?

Clémence Perronnet

Résumé

Our proposal's aim is to assess the current situation of the integration of gender issues in french schools. In 2013, when the Ministry of Education tried a school program named « ABCD of Equality » (CNDP, 2013; Reseau-Canope, 2013) in 600 schools in order to fight against gender stereotypes and sexism, the program triggered a major public debate. The controversy is a violent criticism of gender studies and their application in teaching, and the objectors denounce the fact that children are taught théorie du genre (“gender theory”). We will explain the political context and the discussions that took place around the “marriage for all” law that opened marriage to same-sex couples. The « ABCD of Equality » have since been abandoned, and on November 25, 2014, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, Minister of Education, Higher Education and Research, presented her plan to replace the ABCD, its most important measure being to create a website offering “many online resources to assist teachers, parents and stakeholders in the educational community”. In a situation where gender “theory" crystallizes fears, and in debates in which a very strong homophobia was expressed, what place is left in programs for reflection on gender identities? Isn't falling back on “equality” and educational counseling issues a way to keep the dichotomy between girls and boys intangible? References CNDP, (2013). ABCD de l’ égalité.
