Théories chinoises sur l'écriture

Abstract : In this outline on the Chinese theories on writing, I show the importance of the relationship between written signs and realities, as well as the triteness of sound notation in the first reflexions on writing. I insist on the possible influence exerted by the knowledge of the indian writing system on a new analysis of the Chinese writing as a full system, not only including sound but also and mainly meaning. A few centuries later, grasping the mechanisms at the basis of the Indian script Zheng Qiao (XIIe) transposed them to the Chinese writing system. He then distinguished two kinds of characters (simple and compound), while reintroducing an old Chinese pedagogical method (liù shū) as a traditional theory on writing. Since then, standing out as the only theory on writing, the liù shū definitively dismissed the other ones as well as any phonetic analysis of the Chinese writing to give weight to the graphico-semantic analysis.
