Les multiples visages d’un archiatre pontifical du XVIe siècle. Activités et fonctions de Michele Mercati au Palais Apostolique

Résumé

This article aims to investigate different aspects of the activity of Michele Mercati (1541-1593), physician and naturalist at the papal court. Personal physician to several popes, Guardianus of the Vatican botanical garden, creator of a new mineral collection, Mercati was also entrusted by the pontiffs with important political missions. He played a crucial role in the cultural policies of Rome for more than twenty years, during which his functions changed in relation to his intellectual journey and different pontifical cultural agendas. Drawing from a mix of administrative, scientific, printed and informal sources, the article examines the different phases of his activity and the way in which his various functions existed alongside each other and interacted over time. Michele Mercati’s case can help to shed new light on the figure of the papal doctor, on the intersection between medicine and other fields of knowledge and on the relationship between scholars and men of power in early modern period.
